A 75-year-old man has been shot in the face with an air rifle while visiting a hospital in Tyneside.

The man was walking out of the car park at South Tyneside District Hospital in South Shields on Sunday evening when a pellet hit him above the right eye.

He received treatment in the accident and emergency department where he was kept overnight.

Police said a 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old male youth had been arrested on suspicion of wounding.

An air rifle and ammunition were recovered by officers.
