Murder probe into street stabbing
Police on Tyneside have begun a murder investigation after the death of a man found with multiple stab wounds.

The 25-year-old man, who has not been named, was found lying in the street in Fellgate Gardens, Gateshead, in the early hours of Saturday.

He was taken to hospital, but later died. Police said the victim had suffered multiple stab wounds.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said one man had been arrested on suspicion of murder.

She said the incident is thought to have followed a street altercation involving several men who had earlier been drinking in a nearby pub.

A baseball bat and axe were recovered from the scene, but detectives are still looking for a murder weapon.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man is in a critical, but stable condition, after being stabbed in a separate incident in Newcastle.

The man was found in the early hours of Saturday in East Thorp on the city's Newbiggin Hall Estate.

Police have appealed for witnesses.
