Arsonists hit addicts' allotment
Drugs workers have vowed not to be beaten after arsonists targeted allotments used as a rehabilitation centre for former addicts.

Almost £5,000 worth of damage was caused to the allotments in South Shields, when arsonists torched a storage shed and a portable toilet.

The site is owned by the South Tyneside Drug Action Team (DAT) and is considered a vital resource.

Organisers said they want to try to rebuild the allotments.

'Real lifeline'

Sharon MacInnes, a DAT community development officer, said: "We were absolutely devastated when we were told about this fire.

"The allotments have been a real lifeline to our clients. We established the plot four years ago in response to a direct request from young people in the area who wanted something positive to do with their time," he said.

"This service rapidly expanded to offer young people and adults in treatment the opportunity to learn new skills and develop environmental knowledge, and as many as 50 people have found employment after being involved with the project."

The allotments produced fresh vegetables which were given to elderly people living locally, and also to a soup kitchen.

Ms MacInnes added: "The arsonists threw everything into the flames and all production is at an end. We are desperate for cash, or help of any kind, but we've vowed that we will not be beaten by this."
