Vandals delay bike route opening

Vandals have delayed by a month the opening of Tyneside's first purpose-built mountain bike trail.

The 2km Forestry Commission route, in Chopwell Wood, near High Spen, Gateshead, was due to open next week.

But the launch has now been put back until September after signs were destroyed on Sunday.

Volunteers from the North East Freeride Association (NEFA) have spent five years building the trail which involved shifting 150 tonnes of stone.

Alex MacLennan, recreation, tourism and community manager, said: "This was an act of vandalism that will deprive many folks from having a good time during the holidays.

"The trail is a tribute to the hard work of volunteers and we won't be shunted off-course. Good signage is important to ensure everyone stays safe."
