Heavy snow forces airport closure
Newcastle Airport
Airport staff worked to keep the airport open
Heavy snow forced the closure of Newcastle Airport early on Tuesday.

Staff worked to clear runways and de-ice planes hit by freezing conditions, which have gripped the north-east of England.

Runways at the airport had to be closed and were not reopened to air traffic until 0700 GMT, a spokeswoman said.

Passengers were faced with some flight delays, but the spokeswoman said most would be back to normal by the end of the day.

Elsewhere most roads in the region were passable with care and there were no reports of major disruption.

However, drivers were warned to take additional care and leave extra time for journeys.

The bad weather also forced the closure of schools in Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear and Teesside.
