Three people were killed after their car veered off a bridge and landed on its roof in a river.
Elizabeth Carroll, 22, Richard Hornsby, 25, both of Wylam, and James Robson, 28, of Gateshead, were rescued by fire crews but pronounced dead in hospital.
It is not yet known how the car plunged into the River Tyne from Wylam bridge, in Northumberland, on Saturday night.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said it is believed the car was travelling south when it left the road.
It is thought Ms Carroll was driving the car and Mr Hornsby was the front seat passenger.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is being asked to contact police.
