Mare and foal dead after accident
A horse has been killed and another had to be shot by police after they were hit by a van.

The accident happened on the A696 near Ponteland, in Northumberland, on Tuesday morning.

Northumbria Police said the mare and foal had managed to get out of their stable complex and on to the road, which was closed for about two hours.

A police spokesman said the van driver was lucky to escape from the collision with only minor injuries.

Sgt Kevin Haindhaugh, from Northumbria Police, said: "The mare was killed instantly.

"Unfortunately the foal was so seriously injured it had to be humanely destroyed by officers from our central support unit at the roadside."
