The Tyne will welcome dozens of tall ships
Volunteers are being invited to sign up for the Tyneside leg of the Tall Ships Race 2005.

Young people aged between 16-25 can now apply to sail on board a tall ship from Cherbourg to the north-east of England.

Applicants will have to explain what benefits they think they will gain from being chosen, and will have to raise money for the voyage fee.

Tyneside will host the race from 25-28 July, and for the first time ships will be berthed on both banks of the river.

The race attracts vessels from all over the world, and up to 4,000 crew members from almost 20 countries.

'Ability and confidence'

Phil Payne, NewcastleGateshead's Tall Ships' manager, said: "We've already had many people asking how they can sign up, so we expect there will be a huge demand for places.

"Despite its name, the main focus of the tall ships races are not on racing at all but on sail training.

"For thousands of young people being a volunteer on board a tall ship is a unique chance to make new friends and have new experiences regardless of their background.

"While on board the trainee crew members learn about sailing the sea and above all about themselves.

"The aim of the trainee programme is to give young people the ability and confidence to face new challenges, while also teaching them how to mix well with other people from all walks of life."
