Security operation for EU meeting
Police are putting together plans for a high-profile security operation ahead of another major meeting.

In February, Northumbria Police set up a "ring of steel" for Labour's spring conference in Gateshead, with hundreds of officers on duty.

EU ministers are due to meet in Gosforth, Newcastle, in September.

The force said it is working with other agencies to balance the necessary security requirements with the needs of residents and businesses.

A large number of officers will be involved in the operation, although an exact figure has not yet been released.

Alertness call

Specialist units, including firearms, will be on duty for the event at the Marriott Hotel.

The force said there will be sufficient police officers and staff on duty throughout its area during the event.

As the event is on private land, there is not expected to be too much disruption.

A secure area will be set up around the site with entry only granted to those with authorised passes.

Police said there is no specific intelligence to suggest the event will be targeted by terrorists, but are urging people to be alert to any suspicious activity.
