Families want justice for sisters
Mildred Bowman 62 and Alice Wardle 67
Mildred Bowman and Alice Wardle may have been trapped for days
The daughter of one of two Tyneside women killed when a foldaway bed collapsed at their Spanish hotel, has said she wants "justice" for the pair.

Alice Wardle, 67 and Mildred Bowman, 62 were trapped and may have lain for four days before their bodies were discovered in a Benidorm apartment.

A heavy wooden frame fixed to the wall by screws came free and collapsed on them after they went to sleep.

Mrs Bowman's daughter Carole Gregory has called for a full investigation.

Mrs Gregory, 44, said she was determined to find out exactly how her mother and aunt died.

The widows' bodies were found side by side in the twin beds after relatives, also holidaying in the resort, became concerned about them.

An inquest into the women's deaths was adjourned in Spain, after hearing their bodies were found on Thursday.

It is thought the pair, from Gateshead, went to their room at the Levante Club Apartments sometime on Sunday to rest.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said a police investigation into the tragedy was continuing.

The Spanish embassy in London confirmed that relatives of the dead women were receiving "every assistance" from the authorities in Benidorm and Madrid.

Mrs Gregory said: "I want justice for them. I don't want anybody to go through this again.

"It's been terrible. This sort of thing should not happen in this day and age. To me someone has got to be responsible for this.

"We have got legal representation in Benidorm and are determined to find out what happened. It's like living a nightmare and the family is determined to get justice."

A family group flew to Benidorm to join other relatives already in Spain in a bid to establish how the sisters died.

They were displaying pictures of the women in a bid to find out when they were last seen.

Mrs Gregory said relatives were expecting to head home at the end of the week, but was unsure when the bodies of the sisters would be returned.

A spokesman for the Levante Club Apartments, said: "This is in the hands of the police and the authorities.

"We cannot say anything further out of respect for the families. They are the most important people in this situation."
