Proposals for new Tyne crossing
Bridges over the River Tyne
There is a long tradition of building bridges in the area
Plans for another bridge across the River Tyne have been unveiled.

Regional development agency One NorthEast has announced the proposals for the footbridge and cycleway to connect Newburn Riverside with Blaydon.

It would link the business park at Newburn Riverside with the shopping centre, railway station and bus interchange at Blaydon.

The plans are for a single-span bridge which could be one of the longest in the country.

Job opportunities

One NorthEast is working with Newcastle City Council, Gateshead Borough Council and the Port of Tyne on the project.

It would be built at an ancient river crossing point which has been used over the years as a ferry landing.

A competition will be set up to produce a design and construction is due to start in 2005.

One NorthEast board member Phil Hughes said: "One NorthEast is committed to the Government's green transport policy and this bridge will provide Newburn Riverside with an important connection to the bus and rail services at Blaydon.

"Also importantly it gives the residents of Blaydon and its surrounding area access to the job opportunities that will develop on the business park."
