Pork pie traps racecourse runaway

A runaway pooch, which pestered punters and flustered fillies at a racecourse, was trapped after seven months - by a pork pie.

The elusive collie, christened Dwaine, was finally caught after being tempted into an animal trap at Sedgefield racecourse.

Dwaine, named after suspended Olympic sprinter Dwaine Chambers, was a regular - if at times unwelcome visitor - to meetings at the County Durham venue.

But he always proved too fast for those trying to catch him - until he succumbed to the meaty bait.

At one point management at the course considered using another animal on heat in an effort to tempt Dwaine away from track.

One local bookmaker even offered a £500 charity bet for the person who captured the black and white collie.

But it fell to a Durham dog warden to bring the saga to an end.

A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), said Dwain would be housed in nearby kennels, before being found a permanent home - away from the racecourse.
