Praise for 'Save our Steel' march

Thousands of people took part in the march and rally

A council leader has praised all those involved in an event in support of the threatened Corus plant in Redcar.

Up to 2,000 jobs at the Teesside Cast Products factory are at risk after an international consortium pulled out of a 10-year deal to buy its steel.

On Saturday an estimated 5,000 workers and their families took part in a "Save our Steel" march through the town.

George Dunning, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Council, extended a "big thank you" to all those involved.

Mr Dunning, who also took part in the march and spoke at the rally, thanked the unions at the plant for organising the event.

He added: "Most of all many thanks to the people who did the march and those who lined the streets of Redcar clapping and cheering.

"One hopes this campaign will be the platform to save not only our steel jobs but our manufacturing heritage, which our Teesside and surrounding area is built upon."
