Chemical spillage sparks warning

Drivers who used a stretch of road hit by a chemical spillage on Teesside are being advised to hose down their tyres.

Police said phenol leaked from a tanker on to the A19 between the Portrack roundabout and the Wolviston turnoff on Thursday.

The clean-up operation, involving firefighters and Environment Agency officials, caused major tailbacks.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said vehicles were likely to have become contaminated between 1130 and 1330 BST.
