Dragon's Den tycoon Duncan Bannatyne is to be awarded a Doctorate of Business Administration from Teesside University.

Mr Bannatyne will join the university's vice-chancellor and other senior members in an academic procession through Darlington on Friday.

Later, the town's Dolphin Centre will be the venue for the awards ceremony.

Mr Bannatyne was born in Clydebank, Scotland, and now has homes in the Tees Valley as well as London and France.

Mr Bannatyne said: "It will be a huge honour to receive this honorary degree from the University of Teesside, which I've come to regard as my local university."

He has been part of the BBC's Dragons' Den panel since January 2005.

On the programme, aspiring entrepreneurs pitch for investment in the Den from the panel of Dragons - five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

In 2004, he was awarded an OBE for his services to business and charity.
