Views sought on coast protection

Hartlepool residents are being asked for their views on how a section of coastline should be protected against rising sea levels and erosion.

The council has been looking at ways of improving reinforcements to the Headland's ancient town wall and surrounding area.

It covers the stretch of wall to the Pilot Pier, plus the Fish Sands.

Tests are also being carried out to assess the long-term viability of existing structures.

A consultation leaflet is being sent to all homes in the area, and people can also complete a questionnaire on the council's website.

Councillor Peter Jackson, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and communities, said: "People shouldn't be alarmed by the study.

"However, rising sea levels and beach erosion are now a fact of life around the country and we need to make sure that we have the most suitable sea defences in place to protect our coastline in the years ahead.

"It's very important that local people, businesses and organisations share with us their knowledge of the town wall area and give us their views on how best to protect it."
