Offshore wind farm a step closer

Proposals for a wind farm off the coast of Teesside have moved a step closer.

Power firm EDF Energy Renewables has now been given planning permission to build an onshore substation and an underground cable route.

In September 2007, the company was given government consent to build 30 420ft turbines at a site 1.5km off the coast of Redcar.

Construction work is due to begin next year, and it is expected to be complete by 2011.

Redcar and Cleveland Council approved the substation plan at a meeting on Monday.
