Knife amnesty results encouraging

Sharp instruments can be dropped off in special bins

More than 350 knives and bladed instruments have been handed in to police during the first 10 days of an amnesty on Teesside.

The five-week initiative, which began on 4 September, was suggested by the members of the Stockton Youth Independent Advisory Group.

By 14 September 352 had been left in special bins set up at police stations.

A Cleveland Police spokesman described the early results as encouraging. The amnesty will run until 12 October.

The haul included a set of three samurai and two decorative swords.

Sgt Craig Green said: "We are greatly encouraged by the numbers of knives and other blades being handed in and we'd like to thank everyone who has taken the time to do so.

"I'd also like to remind residents that this campaign still has nearly three weeks to run and I urge residents to continue to dispose of knives.

"That way we can help make our communities safer for everyone."
