The dig aims to uncover 18th Century artefacts

Archaeologists are hoping to uncover 18th Century artefacts during a dig on the site of a medieval village.

The excavation will be the fifth at East Marton at Middlesbrough's Stewart Park and previous efforts revealing bones, coins and pottery.

The latest work gets under way on 13 May and an appeal for volunteers has been launched.

The dig is being organised by Teesside Archaeological Society, Tees Archaeology and Middlesbrough Council.

It aims to find evidence of life in the village during the time of James Cook's birth in 1728 and earlier.

A granite urn erected in 1858 by Henry Bolckow of Marton Hall marks the site.
