Channel 4 portrayal angers mayor
Ray Mallon
Mr Mallon says jobs and investment may have been jeopardised
Middlesbrough's mayor plans to complain to media regulator Ofcom unless Channel 4 apologises for branding the town the worst place to live in the UK.

Former Cleveland Police officer Ray Mallon says the borough was misrepresented in the programme "Location, Location, Location".

Despite receiving a letter from the channel acknowledging his complaints, he is still demanding a full apology.

The broadcaster said Middlesbrough was portrayed "fairly and accurately".

In "Location, Location, Location: Best and Worst Live", the town topped a list of the UK's worst residential areas, above Kingston-upon-Hull and Newham.

Edinburgh was voted the best place to live in the programme.

Channel 4 said the independent survey was based on data from bodies including local authorities, the Home Office and Office for National Statistics.

But Mr Mallon claims some of the shots featured in the programme were not in Middlesbrough, and that many facts were dated, inaccurate and muddled.

He has written to Channel 4 and received a "long letter" of reply, but says the response does not go far enough.

He said: "I'm going to analyse the letter in more detail and decide what to do next. I'm very confident that we're going to get a full unequivocal apology.

"I'll give Channel 4 a bit of credit because the letter does give some ground, but I'm still boycotting the channel until we get a full apology. Failing that, we'll complain to Ofcom."

Mr Mallon also claims the poll could jeopardise jobs and investment on Teesside.

A Channel 4 spokesman said: "We are confident that the programme dealt with Middlesbrough fairly and accurately, showing both good and bad aspects of the area."
