Police said they are looking at claims the disappearance of an Indian teenager while on a cricket trip was planned.

They put out an appeal in July when Dalbir Singh, 18, who was with a school group from the state of Punjab, did not show up for their first match.

Police said they were looking at a report in an Indian newspaper in which his mother allegedly said she paid for him to be helped to settle abroad.

Cleveland Police said a file would be prepared for the Immigration Service.

Det Insp Tony Riordan, from Cleveland Police, said: "We always had our suspicions that things were not right when Dalbir Singh was reported missing and the comments allegedly made by this youth's mother, and reported in an Indian newspaper, would confirm evidence we have gathered through our own investigations.

"Our inquiries are continuing. A file will be prepared for the Immigration Service and, once he's found, this youth will be arrested and recommended for deportation."
