Two students have been stabbed on a university campus only hours after a national knife amnesty got under way.
The students were stabbed on the university campus
The two men, in their early 20s, were near Teesside University library near Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough when a youth from a nearby group ran at them.
A struggle then followed, and at some stage both students received stab wounds requiring hospital treatment.
Police say the incident, on Wednesday night, has been captured on CCTV, and urge those responsible to come forward.
A Cleveland Police spokesman said: "This was a particularly nasty and unprovoked assault.
"It is particularly ironic as we have just launched a knife amnesty, and this terrible incident demonstrates the danger of carrying knives."
