Car crime stings help cut thefts
A team of officers targeting car crime have helped reduce vehicle thefts by a third in three months, Cleveland Police force has said.

Following the introduction of Operation Hatch, the number of stolen cars fell by 38% from October to December 2005 compared with the same period in 2004.

Thefts from vehicles fell by more than 20%, from 761 to 594 in three months

The officers used both covert and high visibility patrols, and sting vehicles kitted out with recording equipment.

A new poster campaign reminding motorists to remove belongings from cars and to use alarms is launched on 13 February.
