Policeman admits killing his wife

A policeman has pleaded guilty to stabbing his wife to death.

Pc Graham Jones, 40, better known as Ivor, denied murdering wife Maria, 36, but admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

She was discovered with multiple stab wounds at their home in Ingleby Barwick, near Stockton, Teesside, in December last year.

Jones was remanded in custody for pre-sentence reports and will appear at Teesside Crown Court on 3 June.

Few details about the case were heard at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday, but at a hearing at Teesside Magistrates' Court in December, a troubled family background was revealed.

Marriage strain

His wife supported him through the death of his father and brother, which happened within months of each other, and Mr Jones began treatment for depression in September last year.

The couple were also put through the trauma of a "malicious" charge that they had physically abused a child, with the case only dropped on the day the trial was due to begin, magistrates were told.

But the difficulties put a strain on the marriage and Mrs Jones went to stay with her parents, the court heard.

Craig Beer, representing the officer, told the earlier hearing while she was there she formed a relationship with a 21-year-old.

Mr Beer told the hearing she admitted the affair and he was prepared to forgive his wife but she wanted an "open marriage".

At Tuesday's court hearing, Franz Muller QC, prosecuting, said Mr Jones claimed his wife told him: "You know I slept with this man on a number of occasions, how are you going to put up with the fact that I am going to sleep with other people?"
