Voters said Mo Mowlan was honest and humorous
Former Northern Ireland Secretary and Teesside MP Mo Mowlam has been voted the nation's favourite politician of all time - ahead of Winston Churchill.

The former Redcar MP, who died last month, beat the World War II leader into second place in the YouGov poll.

Former Tory leader Margaret Thatcher was third, followed by Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Those who took part in the poll said they chose Ms Mowlam for her honesty and sense of humour.

She received one-fifth of the vote in the poll of 2,000 people.

Ms Mowlam, who was Redcar MP from 1987 to 2001, died aged 55.

Civic leaders on Teesside are considering a permanent memorial to her.
