Past and present mayors of Redcar are joining forces to consider a memorial to the late Mo Mowlam.

Mayor Councillor Peter Spencer has invited three former mayors to put together a task force to investigate how the town can sustain her memory.

Ms Mowlam, who was Redcar MP from 1987 to 2001, died last month aged 55.

Possible tributes include a memorial event, hopefully to be staged before the end of the year, as well as a more permanent tribute.

The task force will include Labour's Vilma Collins, a long-time friend of Ms Mowlam and her election agent in 1987, Madge Moses (Liberal Democrat) and Norah Cooney (Conservative).

Councillor Spencer said: "I think the only thing we're all agreed on at the moment is that we do want to remember Mo, firstly with a memorial event and secondly with something that will keep her memory and spirit alive in this area.

"The three former Mayors and myself know how much Mo meant to our community and now we want to try and assemble our thoughts and ideas into something tangible."
