A 26-year-old musician has appeared before magistrates charged with deliberately infecting women with the HIV virus by having sex with them.
One of the alleged victims is a 15-year-old girl from Middlesbrough.
Feston Konzani, an African asylum seeker, appeared before Teesside magistrates on Tuesday charged with three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to two women and the teenage girl.
Mr Konzani, originally from Malawi, also faces a further charge of unlawful sexual intercourse in relation to the girl.
All of the alleged offences were carried out in Middlesbrough over a three-year period between February 2000 and May 2003.
It is alleged the women - aged 25 and 26 - and the teenager discovered they had been infected with the HIV virus after having sex with Mr Konzani.
Mr Konzani, who appeared in court wearing a dark padded jacket and dark V-neck jumper, spoke only to confirm his name.
No application for bail was made by Mr Konzani's solicitor Richard Vaux.
Mr Konzani, of Albany Street, Middlesbrough, was remanded in custody by bench chairman Ian Johnson to appear at Teesside Crown Court on 18 November.
