Crash driver made police donation

A 79-year-old man who drove into a bollard in Sussex has thanked police who dealt with the incident by making a £1,000 donation to their charity.

The motorist, who is from Chichester, decided to surrender his driving licence after the collision in Littlehampton last month.

The driver has since given £1,000 to the Police Dependants' Trust.

Insp Phil Nicholas said little damage was caused and officers would not be taking any formal action against him.

He said: "This is a very kind gesture from the driver. Thankfully no one was hurt in this collision.

"I am also pleased that the driver has taken a very pragmatic approach to his ability to continue to drive."

The Police Dependants' Trust helps the families of officers or former officers who die or have been incapacitated while carrying out their duty.
