The girlfriend of a Brighton soldier killed weeks after he arrived in Afghanistan wept as his body was returned to Britain.

Kate Woolley, 24, watched the final journey of Guardsman Jamie Janes, 20, as his body was driven through the town of Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire.

She threw flowers on to the hearse as it was driven away from RAF Lyneham.

Two of Guardsman Janes's best friends, Sheriden Hawks, 19, and Lloyd Break, 20, stood beside her in the rain.

Also among the group which travelled from Brighton and London were Guardsman Janes's two sisters-in-law and his stepfather Mark Sargent, 37.

It is believed the soldier's mother was also there.

The family moved to Brighton when the serviceman was two, and he attended Hove Park Comprehensive School.

Guardsman Janes, of 1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards, was killed on a foot patrol near Nad-e-Ali district centre in Helmand on Monday.

He was flown back to the UK on Friday with Acting Cpl Marcin Wojtak, 24, from Leicester, of 34 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment.

Acting Cpl Wojtak died in a blast while patrolling near the perimeter of the UK's main base in Helmand Province on 1 October.

Both men had just been deployed to Afghanistan as part of 11 Light Brigade, which is taking over as Britain's force in the country for the next six months.

Their coffins were taken from RAF Lyneham to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital.
