Murder inquiry after club attack

A 19-year-old man has died in hospital after being attacked in a nightclub in a Sussex seaside town.

Police have begun a murder inquiry after the assault at the Funktion Rooms in Eastbourne, early on Saturday.

No details of the victim's injuries have been released by police, but it is understood that no weapon was used.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested and is in custody in Eastbourne, where he is being questioned on suspicion of murder, Sussex Police said.

Local men

Det Ch Insp Trevor Bowles, from the force's major crime branch, said: "We are in the early stages of a murder investigation.

"The victim and the suspect are both local men and we will be dedicating our resources towards establishing the truth of what happened at the Funktion Rooms in the early hours of this morning."

He added: "There were hundreds of people at the venue at the time.

"We would urge anyone who was in the basement, called The Sub Club, on Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday morning, to come forward."

He said police could not identify the dead man until his next-of-kin had been traced.

Emergency teams were called to the venue at about 0045 BST.

The man was taken to the Eastbourne District General Hospital where he died. A post-mortem examination is due to take place.

The nightclub, in Pevensey Road, in the centre of Eastbourne, is divided into three rooms, with each one playing different styles of music.
