Girl and granddad in sea rescue

An 84-year-old man tried to rescue his teenage granddaughter after she got into difficulty while swimming in the sea off West Sussex.

Solent coastguard said the 13-year-old girl was "sucked" through the timberwork of the pier near West Beach, Littlehampton, at about 1440 BST.

The grandfather swam out to rescue her but also got into difficulties.

A rescue helicopter found the girl, who managed to cling on to the pier. The RNLI brought her grandfather to shore.
