A man who died in hospital after being found in the street in Brighton with stab wounds was a 35-year-old man who lived in the city.

Detectives investigating his murder formally named unemployed Stuart Slade, who lived in Old Steine, on Wednesday.

Officers were alerted by members of the public, who found the victim at about 0230 GMT on Tuesday, in Hampton Place.

He was later taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital where he was declared dead.

Det Ch Insp Steve Johns, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our thoughts are very much with Stuart's family and friends at this tragic time.

"As we continue to piece together Stuart's last known movements earlier that evening, we urgently ask anyone with information to contact the murder inquiry team."

Mr Johns said a "significant number of officers" were working on the investigation and trying to piece together the hours leading to Mr Slade's tragic death.

Police have been viewing CCTV and conducting house-to-house inquiries.

On Tuesday, the force said many people had already contacted officers with possible information, but witnesses were still urged to come forward.
