Murder inquiry after man stabbed

A man who was found lying in a street in Brighton with stab wounds to his upper body has died.

Police have started a murder inquiry after the man in his 30s was found in Hampton Place, just off Western Road.

Sussex Police said officers were flagged down by members of the public, who found the victim at about 0230 GMT.

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The victim has not been identified but he is thought to have lived locally.

Det Ch Insp Steve Johns said many people had already contacted the force with possible information, but he still wanted witnesses to come forward.

'Weapon unknown'

He said: "We have a significant number of officers working on this investigation, trying to piece together the hours leading to the tragic death of this man."

Officers were viewing CCTV and conducting house-to-house inquiries, he added.

Mr Johns said that what was used to inflict the injuries was "currently unknown".

He said a post-mortem examination was taking place on Tuesday evening.

The victim's family had been informed, and the man would be formally identified on Wednesday, he added.
