Drink-drive checks see 90 arrests

Ninety motorists have been arrested in Sussex during checks for people driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Officers breathalysed 1,300 drivers in the first two weeks of the campaign to slash numbers of drink and drug-related crashes over Christmas and new year.

The force began its six-week crackdown on 17 November - two weeks before the national drive which started on Monday.

Police promised "more roadside stop checks than ever" and urged drivers not to drink at all.

Supt Steve Barry said the locations of checks were chosen to maximise visibility and the potential for catching offenders.

He added: "There is no failsafe guide as to how to stay under the legal drink-drive limit, or how much you can drink and still drive safely.

"That's why we are urging people to not drink at all if they have a vehicle with them."
