Mother is bailed over fire deaths

A mother who was arrested in connection with a house fire that killed her two young sons has been released on bail, police have said.

Lewis Jenkins, aged seven, and his brother Taylor, five, died in the fire at a terraced house in Milfoil Drive, Eastbourne, East Sussex, on Saturday.

Denise Goldsmith, 29, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and child neglect on Thursday.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said she was released on bail overnight.

Post-mortem examinations confirmed the two boys died from inhaling fire fumes after a blaze started at their house at 1500 BST.

'Uncover circumstances'

Ms Goldsmith was taken to the town's district hospital where she was treated for minor burns and bruises following the fire.

She visited the scene on Sunday and wept as she laid flowers but did not comment on the deaths of the boys and had to be stopped from entering the house.

Fire investigators from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have been working with detectives to uncover the circumstances that led to the boys' deaths.

Ch Insp Dick Coates said on Sunday that initial indications suggested the fire was a tragic accident.

Flowers have been left outside the home of the boys, who were both pupils at nearby Shinewater Primary School.

A special assembly was held at the school on Monday.
