Shoreham Airshow is due to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2009

Record crowds attended a Battle of Britain themed RAF airshow in a West Sussex town.

Attendance at Shoreham Airshow was lower than expected, but it still attracted more visitors than ever in its 19 year history, organisers said.

The show, held on 30 and 31 August, featured displays from RAF planes, as well as memorial flights to commemorate the Battle of Britain.

The event is due to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2009.

An RAF spokesman said Shoreham's show was one of the best of its kind in the country.

"Shoreham have done it again with one of the best shows in the UK, supported by so many wonderful pilots," he said.
