An elderly woman had to be led to safety by firefighters after a fire in her bedroom started by a tea light.
A next-door neighbour called West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service after she smelt smoke coming from the terraced house in Bond Street, Arundel.
Firefighters arrived at the scene in the early hours of Friday to find smoke pouring from the upstairs window.
The woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by South East Coast Ambulance Service.
Three fire engines from Arundel and Littlehampton were sent to the blaze.
Firefighters had to enter the property to help the woman.
"It was was very fortunate that the next door neighbour smelt smoke and quickly called 999 as the property did not have a working smoke alarm fitted," said a fire service spokesman.
