Man rescued from blazing kitchen

A man has been rescued by firefighers from his home in West Sussex after a blaze started in his kitchen.

The emergency services were called to the house in Lancelot Close in Ifield, Crawley, on Friday evening.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus broke into the house to rescue the man and gave him oxygen.

The man's neighbour has been praised by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service for raising the alarm. The blaze was caused by an unattended saucepan.

Frank Pickett, incident commander from Crawley fire station, said: "Fortunately the neighbour acted quickly by responding to the smoke alarm sounding and alerting the fire service.

"This certainly highlights the need for everyone to have a correctly fitted and working smoke alarm."
