The occupants of a helicopter escaped with only minor injuries after the aircraft crashed on land next to a golf club in East Sussex.

The helicopter came down beside Peacehaven Golf Club on the A259 Brighton Road in Newhaven on Monday.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the pilot and passenger evacuated the helicopter after it crashed.

The A259 coast road was closed in both directions for about an hour while emergency services were at the scene.

Sussex Police said the helicopter was damaged but the area was made safe very quickly.

Investigators from the Air Accidents Investigations Branch (AAIB) have been informed and an inquiry has been launched into what caused the crash.
