Seaside development is reviewed

A £290m development plan designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry is to be reviewed by developers in Sussex.

Planning permission for the scheme at the King Alfred site in Hove, which would see flats, restaurants, and cafes being built, was granted in March 2007.

But Karis, the developers, now want to consult investors over a four-week period to see if the plan can go ahead.

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said the review did not mean the development had been abandoned.

"There might be the odd delay with one or two major projects but at the end of the day investors still want to invest in the city," said councillor Ted Kemble.

In a statement, Karis said it was carrying out a thorough review but was committed to providing an "outstanding scheme for Brighton and Hove".

The design for the King Alfred leisure centre site includes 754 flats in two towers and several lower blocks.

About 40% will be affordable housing.

Plans also include a £48m sports centre with a multi-coloured domed roof.
