Kitchen fire claims woman's life

A woman has died in a blaze that started in the kitchen of her second floor flat in East Sussex.

The emergency services were called to Marlborough Court, Southfields Road, Eastbourne, when a passer-by noticed the fire at about 1800 BST on Monday.

Fire crews wearing specialist breathing apparatus tackled the blaze and carried out a search of the property.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the pensioner, who has not yet been named, died at the scene.

Sussex Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

East Sussex fire investigation officer, Neal Robinson, said: "Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the lady who tragically lost her life in this fire.

"East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service continues to work with Sussex Police and Forensic Scientists to investigate the incident. The fire is not being treated as suspicious."
