A male American bulldog has been found dead in a park in East Sussex with more than 50 stab wounds to his neck.

RSPCA officers called to Moulsecoomb Wild Park in Brighton by a member of the public on Wednesday found the animal lying underneath a bush.

Insp Tony Pritchard said: "This poor dog had been stabbed so many times that he was almost decapitated."

The dog was not microchipped or wearing a collar and police have been unable to trace his owner.

The RSPCA said people would have seen the dog in the park, and one person had already rung the police anonymously.

"We would like to hear from anyone who knows who did this," said Insp Pritchard.
