A major road was closed while bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion near a village in West Sussex.
Police shut the A23 and the B2110 in Handcross after a suspect package was found beneath a bridge that crosses the carriageway at 1200 BST on Wednesday.
A bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion on the package, which was found to be harmless.
Both roads were reopened, and a 200m cordon was lifted, at 1430 BST.
Motorists in the area have been warned to expect major delays.
