Arson attack 'devastates' school
A primary school in East Sussex says it is devastated after an arson attack which seriously damaged a classroom.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at Barcombe Church of England school, near Lewes, early on Sunday morning.

Sussex Police said it was quickly established the cause was arson and is asking any witnesses to come forward.

"This is going to cause significant disruption to children and staff alike," said chairman of governors of the 137-pupil school, Carwyn Hughes.

Magnificent response

"Barcombe is a small and tight-knit community and we are devastated by this attack on our fantastic village school."

He said East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service responded magnificently to the fire, going beyond the call of duty in helping the clearing-up operation.

"Their response is indicative of the shared community outrage at this incident," he said.

"The chances are that someone local was responsible and I urge anyone with knowledge to give that person up."
