A vicar from Surrey has set himself the task of visiting all of his 10,000 parishioners over the course of Lent.

The Reverend Canon Mervyn Roberts, who has only recently arrived in the parish of Godalming, wants to introduce himself personally.

"I'm not trying to convert on doorsteps, what I'm trying to say is hello," he said.

Last year, he spent the 40 nights of Lent sleeping on the roof of his then church in Warwickshire.

During that time, while at the top of his church tower, he raised £40,000 in sponsorship towards a new church and community centre.

The season of Lent, which is the time when Christians prepare for Easter Sunday, begins on 17 February.
