Car sharers can save £1,000 a year, it is claimed

A total of £50,000 is to be spent by Surrey County Council in a bid to to help people cut their carbon footprint.

The pledge was made by council leader Dr Andrew Povey, who wants to increase car-sharing and public transport use as a means of saving people money.

Some money will be spent on the council's new traffic website.

About 200 council staff are already members of the car share scheme, which Dr Povey suggested is providing savings of up to £1,000-a-year on bills.

"It's important people know all the transport options available to them. For example, those taking part in the car share scheme... [have] also prevented 574 tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere in a 12 month period," Dr Povey said.

"Car sharing, using public transport and cycling all help cut congestion on Surrey's busy roads so it is important we let people know about all the transport options available to them before they start their journeys."
