Tories pick Spelthorne candidate in primary

The Conservatives have chosen their new prospective parliamentary candidate for Spelthorne, Surrey.

Kwasi Kwarteng was selected in an American-style open primary election at Kempton Race Course on Friday.

The process, attended by more than 600 people, was documented in a live Twitter feed.

Mr Kwarteng, whose mother was a barrister, has pledged to live in the constituency. He beat five other hopefuls after five rounds of voting.

He said his two immediate priorities as an MP would be to improve Ashford Hospital and to ensure any decisions on a third runway at Heathrow were only made after "widely consulting local opinion".
