MP Peter Ainsworth has said he will not contest parliament at the next election
An MP from East Surrey has announced his retirement after representing the same constituency for 18 years.
Peter Ainsworth, was first elected to represent East Surrey in 1992, but the 67-year-old, says he will not contest the next general election.
The Conservative MP gave no specific reason for his decision to stand down.
In a statement, Mr Ainsworth said: "I have done my best to help the most vulnerable people in our community and to protect our local environment."
The statement continued: "Being in opposition can be frustrating, but I believe that in my roles as Chairman of the Environmental Audit Committee and as Shadow Environment Secretary, I played a part in shifting political attitudes towards green issues.
"David Cameron has my wholehearted support and I will continue to work for a Conservative victory at the next general election."
