Police warning over shed thefts

People have been urged to get their garden tools coded following a spate of shed thefts in Surrey.

Surrey Police said items worth about £3,700 were taken by thieves in Frensham, Milford and Hindhead.

Officers want householders to make sure tools and garden equipment are security coded so they can be traced back to the owners if they are stolen.

They also urged residents across the county to give their shed security a "pre-winter check".

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "The contents of sheds and garages can mount up to thousands of pounds and a little time spent on improving security could save a huge cost and the inconvenience of having to replace items and repair damage.

"Items such as tools, garden furniture, lawnmowers and bicycles should be marked permanently and prominently with name, postcode and house number."
