Rare jewellery stolen from home

Police in Surrey have appealed for help in tracing "rare and distinctive" jewellery worth more than £4,500 stolen from an 85-year-old woman's home.

Twenty-two items were taken from a house in Harestone Valley Road, Caterham, while the owner was on holiday between 23 and 27 October.

Police said much of the jewellery was unique, having been commissioned by the woman's late husband.

A number of the items contained pearls, sapphires, diamonds and rubies.

The haul included many unusual brooches and necklaces, bracelets, rings and a gold ladies watch made by Watches of Switzerland.

Det Con Audrey Cumiskey said: "The items stolen during this burglary are rare and distinctive and many were specially commissioned by the victim's late husband and thus have huge sentimental value."

She appealed for help in tracing the jewellery from people who shop at auction houses, antique shops or internet auction sites.
